The question is who is a true believer in reality? Even in this regard, people have some misconceptions.

Attributes of True Believers (Momin)
Attributes of True Believers (Momin)
Introduction to True Believer (Momin):
Apart from Momin being the name of Allah, it is also the characteristic of a faithful Muslim. Allah says in the Quran while praising the true believer known as Momin in Arabic language:
Indeed, those who remain restless and tremble with fear of their Lord. And those who believe in the Revelations of their Lord, and those who do not associate (any) partners with their Lord. And those who give away (in the way of Allah as much) as they can, yet (in spite of that) their hearts fear that they are to return to their Lord (lest it should be rejected). It is these people who are hastening in (collecting) good works, and it is they who excel in this pursuit. (23: 57-61)
Quran mentions True Believer (Momin):
Certainly, the believers have attained their goal. Those who become most humble and submissive in their Prayers. And who (always) keep away from absurd talk, and who (always) pay Zakat (the Alms-due [and keep purifying their wealth and souls]). And who guard their private parts (all the time. They go to them according to the Islamic injunctions,) there is surely no blame on them. But whoever desires someone beyond these (lawful women), it is they who are transgressors (and disobedient). And those who are watchful of their trusts and their pledges. And who guard their Prayers (with persistence). It is they who will be the inheritors (of Paradise). They will (also) inherit the most superior Gardens of Paradise (where all the bounties, comforts and pleasures of nearness to Allah will abound). They will live there forever. (23:1-11)
Hadith Regarding True Believer (Momin)
Abu Hurairah relates the tradition that Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) said, “I swear by Him who holds my life that none of you is a perfect and true believer unless I am dearer to him than his parents, children and all others.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) said,
“Beware of the discernment of the true believer because he sees through Divine light.” (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Sa’id al-Khudri relates the tradition that Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) said, “Whatever hurt, illness, trouble, sorrow and grief as well as torment reaches a true believer, even if he is pricked by a thorn, Allah forgives all his mistakes in exchange of all these trials and difficulties. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Muslim)
Gratitude and Patience as an Attribute of True Believer (Momin)
Patience is a special attribute of a true believer. He is grateful towards Allah in every condition. Consequently, Allah forgives his sins as proved by the following Hadiths:
Sohaib relates that he heard the Holy Prophet (pbuh) say that the matter of the true believer is strange. This is because in every manner, there is goodness. Such grace is only granted to the true believer. If he thanks Allah for his happiness, then this gratitude becomes a way for his goodness. On the other hand, when the true believer practices patience when trouble afflicts him, then such patience leads to goodness for him. (Sahih al-Bukhari)
Misconceptions Regarding True Believer (Momin)
To earn the label of a true believer, some people change their attire and cut off from people remaining busy in worship all the time. They even make their rightful happiness unlawful upon themselves to adopt monasticism. Hence, they assume themselves to be superior than others. Resultantly, two issues occur. First, that the one opting for religious appearance assumes himself as better and superior than others. When common people look at them, they feel that only a specific group of people can have a close connection with religion and everyone does not have this capability. Hence, these simple people visit these so-called true believers (Momin) for getting their prayers accepted and to get amulets. However, this is not how it should be.
Sacred Companions Were True Believers (Momin)
The entire teachings of Quran and Hadith portray the true picture of the orders of Allah and His Messenger (pbuh) that signify how a true believer should be.
Through this picture, one is able to comprehend not only the standard but also the identity of the true believer. This picture was so obvious through the lives of the sacred Companions that Allah Himself bears its witness in Sura al-Fath in this way:
Mohammad (blessings and peace be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah. And those with him are hard and tough against the disbelievers but kind-hearted and merciful amongst themselves. You see them excessively bowing and prostrating themselves. They simply seek Allah’s grace and pleasure. Their mark is an impression of prostrations on their faces (prominent on the foreheads as light). These traits of theirs are (mentioned) in the Torah and the (same) qualities are also (described) in the Injil (the Gospel).
These (Companions) are like a cultivated crop (of Our Esteemed Beloved) which (first of all) brought forth its thin shoot, then made it powerful and strong, and then it thickened and stood straight on its stalk. (And when it flourished, bloomed and danced,) it delighted and charmed the cultivators. (Allah has, likewise, made the Companions of His Beloved strong, grown up trees of faith,) so that by means of them He would inflame the hearts of the disbelievers (that burn in the jealousy of the Holy Prophet Muhammad [blessings and peace be upon him]). Those who believe and do pious works, Allah has promised them forgiveness and an immense reward. (48:29)
Sacred Companions Never Secluded Themselves
We all know that this organisation did not remain away from people in jungles and mountains only for the favour and pleasure of Allah.
They never adopted any such appearance that made people feel different from themselves. They gained the favour and pleasure of Allah the way common people do by fulfilling their needs of life and responsibilities.
Take the example of Bilal ibn Rabah or any other Companion, none of them lived in seclusion from the world or as a hermit or monk. Even if someone tried, Allah did not permit it to happen because such religious display is not part of Islam. Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) got married, wore clothes the way other people did and performed all the necessary acts of life. Therefore, changing appearance and adopting monasticism to become a Momin is entirely un-Islamic.
On the other hand, some people hold the view that whichever Muslim recites Shahadah is a true believer (Momin). This is not true. In Holy Quran, Allah clarifies this on many instances. For instance, in sura al-Ahzab, Allah says:
Surely, Muslim men and Muslim women and the believing men and believing women. (33:35)
Difference between Muslim and Momin
These two differ. This is exactly why Allah has addressed them separately. If this was not so then it would have meant that there is repetition but repetition without a purpose does not coincide with the magnificence of the holy word of Allah.
It is true that whoever recites Shahadah does enter Islam and deserves to be called a Muslim. However, we cannot say that he has also become a true believer (Momin). Its reason has been explained in Quran in this way:
The Bedouins say: ‘We have believed.’ Say: ‘You have not believed. Rather say: We have accepted Islam. And the belief has not yet gone into your hearts. If you obey Allah and His Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him), He will not decrease anything (in reward) for your deeds. Surely, Allah is Most Forgiving, Ever-Merciful.’ (49:14)
Allah has connected faith with inward. This means that Islam is the oral expression but faith is connected to the inward which is emphasized in the following Hadith of the Holy Prophet (pbuh):
True believer (Momin) is he whose inward is adorned with faith. (Muslim, al-Bukhari)
Hence, a common Muslim cannot be a true believer (Momin). It has been established that until faith enters the inward, no one can become a true believer. Faqr (Islamic Sufism) ocuses on the same concept. The question is what actions or behaviour is necessary for a common Muslim to become a true believer.
What Qualities of Believers have been Described in Surah Anfal?
Allah says in sura al-Anfal:
The believers are only those whose hearts, when Allah is mentioned (before them), are filled with awe (at the very idea of Allah’s Greatness and Might). And when His revelations are recited to them, they (the ecstatic, delightful, sweet and sublime words of the Beloved) increase their faith, and they (maintain) their trust in their Lord alone (under all circumstances, and do not look towards anyone other than Him). (They) are those who establish Prayer, and spend (in the cause of Allah) out of whatever We have bestowed upon them. It is they who are (in fact) the true believer (8:2-4)
Again, He emphasises in sura al-Mujadala in this way:
You will never find those who believe in Allah and the Day of Rising making friends with anyone who is hostile to Allah and His Messenger (blessings and peace be upon him), even though they are their fathers (and forefathers), or their sons (and grandsons), or their brothers, or their near relatives. It is they in whose hearts Allah has inscribed faith and has strengthened them with His spirit (i.e., special spiritual benefit). And He will admit them to the Gardens with streams flowing under them. They will live in them forever. Allah is pleased with them and they are pleased with Allah. It is they who are the party of (the devotees of) Allah. Remember! It is the party of (the devotees of) Allah that attain to the goal. (58:22)
Momin Loves Allah and His Messenger more than anything else
In this verse, Allah has pointed out a special attribute of true believers that when faith enters their inwards, then only the love of Allah and His Messenger (pbuh) dominates their inwards and no one else’s love remains. On the contrary, he who is against Allah and His Messenger (pbuh), then the true believer is his enemy.
There are many examples in history which signify this. During the battle of Uhud, Abu Ubayda ibn al-Jarrah killed his father Jarrah. In the battle of Badr, Abu Bakr Siddique called his son Abdul Rehman for a duel but Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) did not permit him for such a fight. Similarly, Umar ibn al-Khattab killed his maternal uncle, A’as bin Hisham bin Mugheera in the battle of Badr. Likewise, during the battle of Badr, Ali ibn Abi Talib and Hamza Abu Ubayda killed the sons of Rubaiya, Utba and Sheeba as well as Waleed bin Utba who were his relatives. Those who have faith in Quran and Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) are not worried about their relatives and loved ones. Regarding this, the Holy Prophet (pbuh) said: “None of you can become true believer until I am more beloved to him than his father, his children and all others.”
Hence, among the characteristics of Islam, being a Momin is necessary.
True Believer (Momin) Takes Inspiration From Prophet (pbuh)
The true believer (Momin) is he who takes inspiration from the character of Prophet Mohammad (pbuh). His speech is truthful and pleasant. He is filled with ardent love for Allah and His Messenger (pbuh). Moreover, he is conscientious and mindful. Patience and gratitude are his treasured possessions. His morals are based on kindness and generosity. According to his spiritual aspect or inward, he is comprehensive of piety, unconditional love for Allah, patience, bowing at the will of Allah, sincerity, humility, modesty and righteous act. Not only does he accept the Oneness of Allah verbally but also verifies it with his inward and expresses this verification through his actions.
He negates his existence and bears witness that no one exists except Allah. One other attribute of the true believer (Momin) is that he is always busy fighting against his innerself. He has divided his time into three parts.
First part: whereby he whispers to Allah.
Second part: whereby he evaluates his self.
Third part: whereby he lawfully fulfills human rights.
Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) says while praising the true believer:
“True believers are soft in their character the way a tamed camel is. If it is told to stop, it stops. If it is made to sit on mountains, then it will sit on them.” (Musnad Ahmad)
How to Become a True Believer in Islam?
Therefore, a true believer remains happy and content in whichever condition Allah keeps him. His trust in Allah is perfect. He has complete trust on the fact that in whichever condition Allah keeps him, that particular condition is best for him because He knows his state more than him. Moreover, he has firm and perfect belief on the following verses of the Quran:
And Allah is the Master of His work, but most people do not know. (12:21)
My perfect spiritual guide, Sultan ul Ashiqeen Sultan Mohammad Najib ur Rehman says:
“That condition in which Allah keeps you is best for you.”
According to a Qudsi Hadith:
“The inward of the true believer lies between the 2 fingers of Allah and He keeps moving it.”
This means that Allah makes his inward go through different states. Sometimes through fear and downfall whereas at other times through happiness and affection. He is sometimes kept in afflictions and at other times he is showered with mercy. However, the true believer does not let even the hardest trial affect his faith.
Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) said: “Salat is the ascension of the true believer.”
Ascension refers to Prophet Mohammad’s (pbuh) meeting with Allah and beholding Him unveiled. Considering this, can a Salat be rightfully called ascension if it is void of the vision of Allah? Certainly not. Such a Salat is only fated to a true believer because only he gains the closeness of Allah through his patience and consistency. On the basis of his ardent love for Allah, Allah grants him spiritual light through which he beholds Allah, converses with Him and hears Him. Then while envisioning Allah, he performs Salat in a way as if he is meeting Allah.
Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) says:
“Worship Allah in a way as if you can behold Him.”
Hence, Allah enlightens and purifies the inward of the true believer with His light. Moreover, Allah then enters and resides in his inward as Allah says in a Qudsi Hadith:
“Neither am I contained in the earth nor the skies but I reside in the inward of the true believer.” (Muslim)
Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) says:
“The inward of the true believer is the throne of Allah.” (Musnad Ahmad)
One of the sins of true believer is that whenever he desires, he envisions Allah in his inward. Such a state is also called faith being stamped upon the inward.
Ali ibn Abi Talib says while praising the true believer:
“The true believer isn’t the one who is pure in public but he is the one who is pure when he is in private. This is because he knows that his Lord is watching him. He does not commit any sin even in private for fear of the displeasure of Allah. With or without people, the desire for the vision of Allah does not let him get near any wrong deed.”
“Muslim is he who believes in Allah and true believer (Momin) is he who completely obeys the orders of Allah.”
“The true believer is similar to the side of scale of balance. The more his faith increases, the more his trials increase. However, the true believer remains patient upon these trials. But what is it that gives him such strength and power? That is the love, closeness and vision of Allah. Unless the inward is adorned with the love of Allah, it is impossible to become a true believer.”
Al-Ghawth al-Azam Shaikh Abdul Qadir Jilani says:
It is necessary for every true believer to follow 3 things in every condition. First is to fulfil the orders of Allah. Second, to avoid all wrong affairs. Third is to bow before that which Allah has destined. No matter what, the true believer makes sure that he follows the aforementioned 3 things. He should always be attentive towards this from within. With his self, he should only talk about these things. Moreover, in every condition, he should keep his inner and outer parts busy in these things. (Fatooh al-Ghaib)
Another believer attribute is that he is not afraid of anyone except Allah nor does he expect or hope from anyone else except Allah. This is because Allah has gifted his inward with a special power. Why would the true believers be without inward power? Afterall, they are close to Allah and always stay near him. Only their body is in this world. (Al-Fath ar-Rabbani)
Prophet Mohammad (pbuh) said:
اَلدُّنْیَا سِجْنُ الْمُؤْمِن
Meaning: The world is a prison for the true believer.
How can a prisoner be happy while imprisoned? He can never be happy. Although, happiness may appear on his face but when he is alone, from within, his inward seems to be tearing apart. It is as if his smile is clothing his body which is full of bandaged wounds so that nobody would figure out his real state. Consequently, Allah keeps pointing at him and shows pride in him in front of the Angels. These are all protectors of the religion of Allah and its secrets. They always stay with him. Bit by bit, they drink the harshness of destiny to the extent that they make Allah their Beloved. (Al-Fath ar-Rabbani)
One of the qualities of Momin in Islam is that his grandeur is that when something from destiny comes up, he accepts it as part of Sharia and embraces his fate. Then, neither his self remains nor any desire. Likewise, there are no desires nor is there Satan the dejected. From this I mean that in comparison to these, the true believer is helped out. This does not mean that he is completely lifeless. (Al-Fath ar-Rabbani)
Sultan ul Arifeen Sultan Bahoo says about the true believer (Momin):
The food of Fakirs is light, their esoteric self is like a stove, their inward is the heavenly Kaaba, their sleep is the presence before Allah and their end is forgiven. To them the ascetics are the labourers who struggle to get a place in paradise. (Ain-ul-Faqr)
What Does Sultan ul Ashiqeen Say Regarding True Believers (Momin)
The Universal Divine Man of this era, perfect spiritual guide who is complete light of guidance and my spiritual guide Sultan ul Ashiqeen Sultan Mohammad Najib ur Rehman says:
The true believer is one whose inward and outward self is the same and whose inward is filled with the bounties of Divine Love.
To devote and sacrifice all the dear and favourite things relations and wealth for Allah is called Divine Love
Allama Iqbal and the True Believer (Mumin)
Explanation: (1)
The Universal Divine Man is the exact manifestation of Allah in all his words and deeds. In every era he appears with a new grandeur and every moment his glory keeps elevating as Allah says;
Every moment, His glory manifests anew. (55:29)
Explanation: (2)
Unless a seeker crosses the realm of bodies, the angelic realm, the realm of power and the realm of Divinity he cannot be titled as a true Muslim (believer) who is one with the Essence and manifests all the Divine attributes. He is titled the Universal Divine Man because he is the paragon who esoterically witnesses the celestial light of angels, purity of Divine soul and embodies both Divine beauty and majesty.
Explanation: (3)
Such a believer is the embodiment of teachings of Quran though he may appear to be its reciter. As Aisha bint Abi Bakr said, “The morals of the Holy Prophet are exact Quran.” The believer follows every step of the Holy Prophet and molds his life according to Quran hence becomes the practical of Quranic teachings.
Explanation: (4)
The Universal Divine Man is the one who implements the Divine commands in the world as he is the representative of Allah on the earth. Allah views and judges His slaves through his eyes. Though the Universal Divine Man is all mercy yet Allah takes him as the best benchmark and a witness to the believers, Muslims and people in general, in the world as well as hereafter.
Explanation: (5)
Universal Divine Man is the one and only who holds and simultaneously manifests the entire attributes of Allah whether of compassion or of wrath. For the lovers of Allah he is all mercy while for the disbelievers he is all majesty. Like the sacred Companions who were soft and loving towards each other but furious and wrathful for the infidels. He is soft natured like dew which gives freshness to flowers as well as strong and magnificent like storm which shakes the rivers.
Explanation: (6)
The Universal Divine Man is absorbed in the pleasure of Divine vision and union since pre-existence. Even in this world his soul remains engrossed in it day and night as the Holy Prophet said:
Meaning: It is the same now as it was before.
Like chapter Rahman of the Quran has a distinctive style, the Universal Divine Man in every era is not only the same as his spiritual predecessor but also different. As each complies with the requirements of ever changing time.
He is the manifestation of the Essence. He is the undeniable blessing to be ever grateful of. (Zarb-e-Kalim)
Attributes of Mumin
Allah says in the Holy Quran:
وَلِمَنْ خَافَ مَقَامَ رَبِّهِ جَنَّتَانِ
And whoever fears standing before his Lord (for meeting), for him are two Gardens. (55:46)
According to a Hadith:
Prophet Mohammad said, “When the true believer (Momin) reaches his end and is about to leave this world, then such angels descend towards him as if their faces are suns (i.e. extremely shiny). Each one of them has a perfume and white clothes. As far as the true believer’s sight can reach, he can only see angels. They sit close to him and then Angel Israel says, ‘O pure soul! Come towards Allah’s mercy and submission.’ When the soul ascends from the body, then the angels hold it. They adorn it with white clothes, perfume it and present it before Allah.
Allah says, ‘Write my slave’s record-of-actions in Eliyin and return him to the earth because I made him from the earth and to the earth is his return. I will raise him again from the same earth.’
Then his soul is returned to his body. Then (in the grave), 2 angels sit close to him and ask him, who is your Sustainer (Rab)? He answers, ‘My Sustainer is Allah’. Then they ask him, ‘What is your religion?’ He replies, ‘Islam’. They ask him that the person who was sent to you, who is he. He says, ‘Allah’s Messenger Prophet Mohammad (pbuh)’. He is inquired about his knowledge to which he says, ‘I have read Allah’s book, brought faith upon it and verified it.’ A voice then comes from the sky, ‘My slave has spoken the truth. Open the doors of heaven for him. Give him clothes of heaven and prepare a bed for him in heaven.’
Then a person with a beautiful countenance, elegantly clothed exuding a pleasant perfume approaches him and says, ‘Glad tidings to you about the bounties, which have pleased me today and which were promised to you.’ The true believer asks, ‘Who are you?’ He replies, ‘I am your pious deeds.’ Then the true believer says, ‘My Lord! Bring the doomsday, bring the doomsday so I go near my loved ones.’ (Musnad Ahmad, Abu Daud)
He is the same believer with whom Allah converses as:
يَا أَيَّتُهَا النَّفْسُ الْمُطْمَئِنَّةُ۔ ارْجِعِي إِلَى رَبِّكِ رَاضِيَةً مَّرْضِيَّةً۔ فَادْخُلِي فِي عِبَادِي۔ وَادْخُلِي جَنَّتِي
O contented (pleased) self! Return to your Lord in such a state that you are both the aspirant to, and the aspirant of His pleasure (i.e. you seek His pleasure and He seek yours. So join My (perfect) servants. And enter My Paradise of nearness and sight. (89:27-30)
I pray that Allah makes us a true believer who submit to Him.

20/12/2021 at 10:05 pmAllah has explained the difference between Muslim and Momin in Holy Quran,
The Bedouins say: ‘We have believed.’ Say: ‘You have not believed.
